Chroniques d'une cour de récré

It's an amazing film about childhood. The boy just began to have some troubles about girls and his friends. And his family was in mess too.His father lose his job,but they were still together and lived happily.
We love the way the director shotted.Using lots of photos instead of video.Just like we are reading an album.
We can easily find the differences between european films and the easten films from this film.
The director uses colors and figures as metaphor to tell the story.

We hope that we can all see more kinds of films in the future in order to boost our own ability of thinking and see the world in different point of view.

metropolis

"Metropolis" is a fantastic futuristic view of the fight of classes. When "Metropolis" was shot, it was a romantic revolutionary period of mankind history, with socialist movements around the world. Fritz Lang directed and wrote the screenplay of this masterpiece certainly inspired in this historical moment and defending a position of agreement and understanding between both sides, showing that they need each other. I wonder how this great director was able to produce such special effects in 1927, with very primitive cameras and equipment. The city of Metropolis is visibly inspired in New York. The performance of Brigitte Helm is stunning in her double role, and this movie is mandatory for any person that says that like cinema as an art.

feedback 2014.11.25

Today's film is different frm last week. It introduced many ways of filming at that time, which, in general speaking, was really simple and dangerous. It shows film industry in France after world war II. The directors are so creative in shooting because there were no regular filming method before, so they can invent any new kinds of methods by their own.
We are especially interested in one film that tells how a director shoot a movie. It's fresh for us to see such scenes that show how to produce a film.

Dogme 95

Dogme 95 was an avant-garde filmmaking movement started in 1995 by the Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, who created the "Dogme 95 Manifesto" and the "Vow of Chastity". It was created to hope that the industry would give the power back to the artist as opposed to the studio. Therefore, these were rules to create filmmaking based on the traditional values of story, acting, and theme, and excluding the use of elaborate special effects or technology
  The following was the rules:
  1. Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
  2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot.)
  3. The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted.
  4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).
  5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.
  6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
  7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now).
  8. Genre movies are not acceptable.
  9. The film format must be Academy 35 mm.
  10. The director must not be credited.

Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang was an ambitious German-Austrian director. He wasn't afraid of giving new things a try. He produced a series of crime silent film. When the age of sound motion picture came, Fritz Lang  did not been beaten by the shock, but face the challenge and produce great films like M(1931). He tried hard in making new forms of film, then he made the world's most expensive silent film at the time of its release, Metropolis(1927). It was the first time that a robot appear in films. Because of the great dedication he had gave, Fritz Lang is also be regarded as the most influential director in the movie history.

Today's film is very interesting. It's composed of many old short documentary, music and narration. These documentary are so interesting! For example, Max Linder's "happy dancing;P", no matter who or what you are, just joyin them and dance! This scene is so cheerful that all of us want to dance and have fun with them!
Another interesting part is the "post-production colour". We're amazed at their work! It need to be very attentive to paint the colour, or it will ruin the scene.
We're also interested in how they do the cutting, and how to assemble each scene together.
This film presents a lot of the film knowledge in a very attractive way. We've learned a lot from it and also enjoyed!

Free Cinema Movement Introduction

Europeans were the pioneers of the motion picture industry (or so-called film industries), with several innovative engineers and artists making an impact especially at the end of the 19th century. An overall example of European Cinema movement is the Europa Cinemas.
It was founded in 1992, by the European Union's MEDIA Programme and several funds, as well as support from France's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and National Center of Cinematography and the moving image. Europa Cinemas is a network of over 1000 cinemas in 588 cities and 60 countries, providing support to cinemas that commit to the screening of European films.
The influence is passed on to 1950s. Many young film-makers were working on different projects to build up the British Cinema Movement. The so-called "Free" Cinema Movement then emerges to other european countries. For example, italian film-maker Lorenza Mazzetti is one of the participants.

Outline of mid-term paper: John Grierson

In this following midterm paper, we choose John Grierson as our topic of report. John Grierson is a Scottish director; he lived in early 20th century and experienced varieties of huge impacts in Europe. John Grierson is the first one who advocates of documentary films. Differ from other directors, this street preacher who defined the Documentary said: “a creative treatment of reality”, trying to “walk into society”, and choose daily life as well as social problems as his main points of his styles of images, using his “machine” to realize and tell social issues actively. Through his effort, he created “documentary film” in his age, and then caused “The British documentary Movement” during the economic crisis of the 1930s and the Second World War. In that time, there comes out lots of socialism movies, like Left-wing films. That is the key point which documentary was born and became part of British culture, and is the reason why John Grierson could be a leader of Grierson sects. Following John Grierson’s experiences, works as well as skill of shooting, we will examine four parts in our group report: first, we will try to talk about experiences as well as lifetime of John Grierson; second, we will discuss John Grierson’s significant works .After introducing this director, we will show his works which are named “ Drifters’’ and “Night Mails”. During playing the clips of his works, we will explain what happens in these movies and finds out some special skills in these movies. Next, in the third parts, we will try to analyze cinema styles, images, the way of shots and specific methods…etc. in John Grierson’s films. In the final part, we will show how remarkable and unique for shooting in John Grierson’s films. That’s all our outline of our group paper at present.

Portrait of Krzysztof Kieślowski

Kieślowski is a Polish director. When he was young, he wanted to be a theatre director. Since there was no such facilities at that time, he couldn't study what he wanted, so he chose film as his temporary step. At the beginning of his career, he was shooting documentary. After that, he started directing some feature films. The most famous films were the trilogy Three Colours, which were very different and interesting in the angles of views.
The titles of the trilogy were derived from the national flag of France. On the surface, they're different stories, but actually, these stories are related to each other(in some details). The relation between these stories and the shooting technique he used are the two main topics we want to discuss about.

Feedback of the Film Watched on 11/18

We have learned some points from the film we watched today. First, George Melies founed the first film company in the whole history. Melies is the one who first painted the films to make them colorful. Second, Asta Nielsen, a Denmark actress, was famous after she became the main character in the film "the byss". She usually portrayed strong-willed passionate woman that trapped by tragic destiny like committing crimes. This kind of stories also shows that the films in Denmark weren't retrained a lot in the past. Last, Operas in France, Italy, and Germany were the most thriving. For instant, Giacomo Puccini in Italy was one of the important composers.

史碩四  吳怡慧
In this film,we can see that in the very 20th century
, French directors as well as Italian directors were good at using magical, skillful methods to create images. They showed these cinema as circus, and a little bit tricky. And perhaps most of themes of those films were talked about human society anddaily life, thenthose films could attracted people's eye. However, I have on question raised by this film: why most of directors wanted to shoot historical topics in 1930s or later days?

大傳三甲林宜瑩
The film has mentioned that百代 was good at colorthe film, but it also mentioned Italygotgreatskill on that. I am curious what kind of skills they use on it?

it's a silence film, we found that the actors' performance seems to be exaggerated in order to express their feelings and emotions clearly to the audience.
that first, people think the son is an idiot and they don't have great expectation on him.
last, it is his son that unions the boss and the workers, as a communication bridge. but somehow i find it attractive even more than any other film. easily seize my eyes, and can keep the emotion in my heart  for a long while.

A Brief Intro of Cinèma Vérité

Cinèma vérité is the French film movement of the 1960s that showed people in everyday situations with authentic dialogue and naturalness action. The term was originated from one of the newsreel series - “Kino Pravda” by Dziga Vertov. The film Chronicle of a Summer directed by Jean Rouch was regarded as the most representative work of Cinèma Vérité. Rather than following the usual techniques of shooting sound and pictures together, the filmmakers tend to directly intervene in the film itself, trying to provoke the “reality” hidden behind in the passive situation or involving stylised set-ups to highlight the subjects. The concept of Cinèma vérité by Jean Rouch’s words is to create reality starting from fiction which has stronger experimental ideas. Though the development of the pure films of cinèma vérité did not last for a long time and the techniques weren’t not well-recognised, it still makes an important role in feature films and provides other possibilities of portraying reality.

The Portrait of Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog, a German director, had been to many countries in his youth, including Britain, Greece, Mexico, Sudan and so forth. It was his rich travelling experience that made his movies full of imaginative scenes. He preferred to allegorize historical events and accentuated human nature in his films. Most of the leading characters in his movies were fanatical and enthusiastic, which underlined the confrontation of human and the God’s will. He was one of the most renowned directors in the movement of The New German Cinema, and also did a good job in documentaries. Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972) was his representative masterpiece.

Midterm Report--Lars von Trier

Our group would like to introduce one of the most accompilshed and influential film director, Lars von Trier. Never caring about others criticisms, he dares to share his unique perpectives by using unexpected techniques. He said, "Basically, I'm afraid of everything in life, except filmmaking." Thus, he boldly puts his thoughts and opinions into the plots though some of them are about sex and cruel behaviors. He insists his shooting styles and keeps trying different kinds of filming ideas to express the dark side of human beings.

We were impressed by the skyscrapers and industry development in the movies because there was no such buildings in that era. We think it reflected the situation at that tie.The labor was exploited by the capital. But the way making this flim was innovative such as "dissolve" and strong and bold light. It was quite interesting due to the heavy make up and exaggerate of the facial expressions.

I feel very interested and motivated.Especially I love the music in the film because there are no script.
Although it is a silent movie, its content is very rich.
Because there is no sound and music, so the story is important and the story is great, amazing in that time.

Metropolis

The star symbol that kept showing up in the film is the sign of the devils, not the star symbol of Jewish people, as the lecturer mentioned in the ending of the previous class. The actual star symbol of Jewish people is supposed to be Judaism six awn star. And this also drew our attention to the film.

In this movie, the machine that workers worked on turned to be a big monster and killed workers.so The real devil is the metropolis or modenlization itself. The symbol of star not only represents the light of science but also considered to be the totem of devils.

Although it has been almost one hundred years, the film still can easily touch our hearts. We like how the film used hands and brain to represent the labors and their boss. we find it interesting that only the rich live above ground while the poor live their life and work underneath. it's sarcastic that he actually predict how the society is like in the modern world. the situation workers had faced matches the reality now.

Metropolis talked about human and industrial society. This film uses variety of critical methods as well as irony concepts to describe negative ways of industrial society. The director tell audiences industrial revolution cause different classes, anxiety and heart-break in society. Frankly speaking, just as tithe female major role's action: we should solve industrial problem, or nobody can be released in industrial society.

We like the metaphor that it uses the mind as a media to connect the head and the hands. It appears at the beginning of the film and ends up the film perfectly by repeating the sentences again. Also, both the boss and the worker leader shaking hands makes resonance.
Since it's a silence film, we found that the actors' performance seems to be exaggerated in order to express their feelings and emotions clearly to the audience.
