In this following midterm paper, we choose John Grierson as our topic of report. John Grierson is a Scottish director; he lived in early 20th century and experienced varieties of huge impacts in Europe. John Grierson is the first one who advocates of documentary films. Differ from other directors, this street preacher who defined the Documentary said: “a creative treatment of reality”, trying to “walk into society”, and choose daily life as well as social problems as his main points of his styles of images, using his “machine” to realize and tell social issues actively. Through his effort, he created “documentary film” in his age, and then caused “The British documentary Movement” during the economic crisis of the 1930s and the Second World War. In that time, there comes out lots of socialism movies, like Left-wing films. That is the key point which documentary was born and became part of British culture, and is the reason why John Grierson could be a leader of Grierson sects. Following John Grierson’s experiences, works as well as skill of shooting, we will examine four parts in our group report: first, we will try to talk about experiences as well as lifetime of John Grierson; second, we will discuss John Grierson’s significant works .After introducing this director, we will show his works which are named “ Drifters’’ and “Night Mails”. During playing the clips of his works, we will explain what happens in these movies and finds out some special skills in these movies. Next, in the third parts, we will try to analyze cinema styles, images, the way of shots and specific methods…etc. in John Grierson’s films. In the final part, we will show how remarkable and unique for shooting in John Grierson’s films. That’s all our outline of our group paper at present.
