Film and Me

My name is Connie and I major in french. I've loved to which movie since I was little. Unfortunately, most of the movies I've watched is made by Hollywood. I didn't know much about european movies though I've watched several french and spanish movies which is played by my teachers. Therefore, I choose this course to expand my knowledge about european movies.

This picture is took at the shooting spot of Seedique Bale. After I've seen the movie, I would like to visit the man-made Wu-She villege in Lin-Kou. So I visited it with 3 of my classmate in the Teacher's Day. And this building is my favorite. It's called Sakura Hotel. It's surrounded by a lot of red pretty cherry blossom. And the building itself is also a beautiful japanese wood building.

Seedique Bale is a touching movie. I've been moved by it. And after I visited Wu-She villege, I feel that I have been closer to this movie. Also, I am amazed by the director. When I in this man-made village, I feel like I'm in the 30's in Wu-She. It's all because of the serious, careful and hardworking of the director.

哲四愛 陳玠雯 / JEAN-LUC GODARD Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930 in Paris, France. His approach to film began in the field of criticism. When the influential critical magazine Cahiers du cinéma was founded in 1951, Godard, was one of the first writers. And in 1959, when Godard makes the first film, À bout de souffle 1960, this film distinctly expressed the French New Wave's style. And I Introduced with the other two films, Une femme est une femme, La Chinoise. Une femme est une femme in (1961), intended as a homage to the American musical. La Chinoise (1967) saw Godard at his most politically forthright so far.

Dolphin cheng/ Wim Wenders

Alabama:2000 Light Years(1969)
Rolling Stones -2000 Light Years From Home
Bob Dylan - All Along The Watchtower
Feeling of alienation and emptiness of Rolling Stones songs in manifest
When two thousand light-years away from home, very lonely
I got a book about Wim Wenders from library, which introduced many of his early films and also mentioned that he particularly likes rock music. It said background music has a high position
in his films, so I searched some of them on Youtube.

I also watched a part of "Wings of Desire"on the net, in addition to Albert, professors in our department recommended this movie to me.
I will talk about Yas ujiro Ozu and Wenders, because Ozu is his favorite director. In his film " Tokyo-Ga "( 1985) at the beginning he said "If in our century something sacred still existed…
if there were something like a sacred treasure of the cinema, then for me that would have to be the work of the Japanese director, Yasujiro Ozu",to sum up
he was inspired by Yasujiro Ozu.

Pamela Pan/ Pedro Almodóvar

Pedro Almodóvar

Pedro Almodóvar is a Spanish film director. He also is famous screenwriter and producer. His films' most prevalent themes are about desire, passion, family, identity, women, the people of the middle and lower classes, love and death. The stories of movies usually complex. Perdro Almodóvar likes to use pop culture, popular songs, humor, strong colors...

For example, the famous movie is called "Volver" in 2006. "Volver" means "to return".  In "Volver", Almodóvar used a lot of strong colors as the background. In the movie, the actress, Penelope Cruz, sang a song, "Volver". The story was humor also.

Kirsty Cheng/ Fritz Lang

新傳四 鄭穎暄 Kirsty Ying-Hsuan Cheng

The dossier of Fritz Lang

What i am going to introduce is an German film director: Fritz lang. He was born in 1890s, and he was a sciptwriter before he began his career as a director.

As he soon moved on to directing, he made many silent films with powerful visual design. Like a short horror tales "Der Müde Tod" in 1921 and a sci-fi film "Metropolis" in 1927 are some of his most influential silent films. "Metropolis" is set in the future in 2026, it's a big-budget film, costing over 5 million marks to produce and being the most expensive silent film.

Fritz Lang is famous for his dark films (both visually and in tone) and he was termed the "Master of Darkness" by the British Film Insititute and left remarkable works on the early film movement, "German Expressionism" (1920-1927).

Not only does he have great performance on silent films, his first talkie "M" in 1931, which is a crime thriller, also being considered as a epic. By 1936 he was in Hollywood, where he directed films for the next 20 years.

In my presentation, I will pick up some of his famous films and be mainly talking about his styles of directing them and what are they famous for, along with showing some clips for you. Of course I will let everybody know his biography and some trivia about him.

Moreover, I will point out some important terms in my presentation, like "German Expressionism", and briefly introduce them. Then, I will give a reflection on what I have learned from this presentation at the end.

A Hollywood Baby Transforming

Hello everyone, my name is Ya-Fan, Chen. My major is italian and Katia is my italian name. I like to watch films a lot, however I am a Hollywood baby for sure. It doesn't mean that I don't like to watch films except Hollywood's. It's because I don't know exactly where I can find the good ones for me to watch. I think it's the main reason I want to have this course. I want to learn what the real movie is!

Recently, I went to watch "One Day" with my friend. It's a romantic movie and I couldn't help myself crying in the theater because of its ending. I always like "happy ending" because I'm the kind of person that easily let my emotions into the story, into the characters. A sad ending would influence me a lot. I would be really upset and in a bad mmod for a few days. Somehow now I'm learning to deal with the depressed endings and trying to understand why it is what the producer and the director want.

In this course, I hope I can learn the european culture through the films. To know more knowledges and histories about the film in the world. I'm looking forward to it!!

Jing-qi, aka Michelle, You're the apple of my eye

Hello everybody! My name is Jing-qi Chang, my English name is Michelle, you can called me Jing-qi or Michelle. I major in italian. I really like to watch movies, because I think I can learn something from movies and another reason is that watch movies can relax myself.

The photo is me and the poster of the movie "You Are the Apple of My Eye". I really like this movie, because it can let me recall my life in senior high.

Actually My English is not good, so I think there will be a lot of mistakes in my introduction. This is my first time to do assignment with English, and I will do my best to overcome my fear to English.

Daisy Wu; korea--european; Persepolis

Hello everyone, my name is Yun Tien Wu. My english name is Daisy. I major in Journalism and Community studies. I'm sorry that I don't have any my profile picture about movie, so I just pick up a picture of mine that the background is similar to Europe, in order to fit the course. Actually, it was in Korea haha.

Many people likes to watch movies, but doesn't means they understand movies. I'm one of them. Under such deep influences from American movies. Our thoughts were mostly built by Hollywood and Disney. Even we have no idea which part from them. That's really a terrible thing. American movies although can bring people happy but kind of superficial, so I want to know European movies more through this class. Jumping out of the box of Hollywood babies' thoughts. Once I saw a movie called"Persepolis", I have crushed on the way it shows the script. I found out that European movies use more art skills in the movies. Besides, the meanings are much deeper. Watch European movies is a enjoyment , both eyes and thoughts. I hope can know more European films and culture in Europe from this course.

Jude, The Constant Gardener

Hello everyone, I'm Zhong-Yuang Wu and my english name is Jude. I major in history. It's my first assignment in englisgh in college, so there must be lots of mistakes, I hope you don't mind. :S

I'm sorry that I didn't have any photo with film which I saw, and therefore I took this photo with the poster-"The Constant Gardener", which was deeply significant for me. Some years ago we met in a theatre. The main reason that I went to was Rechel Weisz. I didn't expect this moive would make any difference to me before I got in, but somehow, it totally turned me around.

For past few years, I've been trying to see some European films, like "Katyn", "Troubled Water", "Welcome"...etc, which were really impressive achievements. I'm gald that I chose this class and great to see you. I would like to know more European flims and directors through this class. Thanks. :)

Kirsty Cheng; journalist fond of filmmaking

Sorry...I dont have any pictures that are doing with films.. I hope this photo that I was holding a camera is more or less related..

Hey everyone, I'm Kirsty Ying Hsuan Cheng.
I major in Journalism, and I have taken few classes about film production during the past three years in college. I found myself really interested in filmmaking, and would like to study for a MFA degree in film or work in a movie studio.Since that, I want to understand much more about what's behind a film, and not just to watch it.

First step for me is to watch as many films as possible, so that's why I chose this class to enhance my knowledge about films, especially for European films that I seldom see before. I have seen Francois Truffaut's "The 400 Blows" few years ago, and I love this kind of film which reflects real life and gives us profound implications that make us wondering what our life have been about.

I also saw some young directors' films, like "I killed my mother" by a French director Xavier Dolan. I appreciate these European directors a lot, and feel like I know very little about European films. So, I am very excited to know more directors and films from Europe by taking this class.

Betty; Cars, Swiss

Hello everyone~
My name is Yun-Chih Hsieh(謝昀芷) and my English name is Betty.I major in law and I like to experience something to add my eyesight. I think watching movies is a great way to take the more information.

This picture is the advertisment of the movie Cars and me,it was taken at a beautiful street in Swiss.I love cartoon and animation:) I think it can arouse my imagination and relax my soul haha.

Great to see you and may we all have good time!!

Heidi Hao, mandarin comedy

Hello everyone, my Chinese name is Chia Hsin Hao and English name is Heidi. My major is Journalism and unfortunately, this is my final year of the school. I didn't take any photo with film tickets, therefore i uploaded this model card, which was the film i watched recently, to share my opinion about it.

Since "You Are the Apple of my Eye" is a hit, a friend of mine and I went to watch the film and indeed it was hilarious; however, to me, it was just a comedy. A comedy which was built by an exaggeration of stupid stuff teenagers have done in high school. A comedy which prettified the director himself and the whole story that was supposed to touch each one of us, but somehow I wasn't. Although I won't give this film an A, I still learned something from it: Live in the moment and grab any opportunity I have to hang out with the boys I like. After all, I don't have much time to waste now.:)

The experience is valuable to me and it can’t be replaced.

Besides, I am in fond of watching movies in my leisure time. Jotting down the reflection and sharing them with my friends afterwards is extremely great. The picture is me and a dramatic personage in Despicable Me(神偷奶爸).

The fact was I did't see the movie. The reason why I was taken a picture with the role was my classmates thought I looked like the role.

The last thing what I want to talk to teacher is my english is poor,I wish I can understand what is teacher say.

Dolphin, Audrey Tautou

My name is Dolphin,I like watching movies, no limit to the type of film, but I’m not really the professionals, like directors and the special effects of them, not to mention that I didn’t know the film's background. The most important thing is I am afraid of horror movies.

But recently I like to pay more attention on the main plot and the talks between the roles, or the films’ soundtracks, some amazing music just let me feel touched, it suits what the story about so hard! I used to collect a lot of OST, and sometimes I like the soundtracks more than the film itself.

Audrey Tautou is my favorite actress, she played < Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain>(艾蜜莉的異想世界) is my favorite movie. Because of the film, I want to go to Paris, hoping to visit the scenes of the movie in person, like Cafe des 2 Moulins or Basilique du Sacré-Cœur.

I also minor in the Department of French in FJU Catholic University because I am very interested in different kinds of cultures, especially French culture. I like to read novels, surf the Internet and watch movies. I like all types of films.

I took this photo at home. The book in my hands was called“Coraline”. Coraline inspired the new 3-D stop-motion animated picture. It had some magical elements. I love this story, because it is wonder and touching. The author of the book, NEIL Gaiman, is New York Times bestselling author. This tale was description of an adventurous girl, Coraline. When she moved to an old house, she felt bored and neglected by her parents. Coraline found there was a special door in the house. Then, she discovered that there’s also another world in it. She had an exciting adventure, and in the end, she realized that her parents love her.

Antonioni's Cina V.S. Mask Changing

<iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/btyzXVw17h8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Director: Pan Jun 52 minutes
Synopsis: People have already forgotten the political storm which arose from the documentary, "China" produced by the film master Michelangelo Antonioni in 1972. Today, when we pursue the tracks in China that the film master had visited 30 years ago, we cannot restrain the temptation to ask a series of questions.
If he was still alive Antonioni would marvel at China's rapid and mystical change. In "Mask Changing" China's appearance flows back and forward between the frame of Antonioni's documentary and the current one…history and presence contrast each other between the contemporary and the past scenes.
Furthermore, the people and the street incidents he captured in Tiananmen, Wangfujing, the town god's temple, the cotton manufactory and "the Red Flag ditch" are unchanged but have experienced more than '''change''. It is not only the modification on the facial expression, environments and materials but most importantly their evolutionary their vision and perceptions. The "Mask Changing" is a drama demonstrating decisively how China and her people have learned to confront the world.

Syllabus and student list

European Cinema and Cultural Studies
歐盟電影文化思潮

Albert Wei-min Tang, Ph.D. (唐維敏)
Associate Professor in film, media and Cultural Studies
ES318, ext: 2814
Venue: ES 108
Time: Monday D7-D8

     A.     Goal
Aiming at combining film policy, film production, film textualization, and film consumption, together with EU festival screening activities, the course will benefit students from attaining more visual experiences and reflexive energy in film analysis, film museum, and creative industries, in order to critically examine image culture in EU-affiliated areas and carefully reflect how Taiwan/Chinese cinema has been received in the mind of the Europeans.
This inter-disciplinary and EU-centered course in film studies will benefit devoted students from multiple academic dimensions, such as EU Film Policy and EU film production as social integration, early film production and texts, New waves and cultural movements, and globalization of major international festivals.
Combining with the annual European Film Festival normally held around December, the course will bridge film screening, film festival, and film cultural discourse, with contemporary film texts carefully selected for audience in Taiwan. The course will also discuss how different screen marketplaces regard Taiwanese film in the past, for the time being, and in the future.
Students can expect more in-depth understanding of European cultural heritage and social integration from film appreciation, film discussion, and film cultural studies which feature inter-nationalistic sentimentalism, identity politics, urbanity landscape, critical cultural policy, and creative industries.

B. Requirement
EUFCS will mainly be conducted in classes and on-line. There will be well-structured screening activities, seminar discussion, lectures, text blogging, video demonstration and other artistic synergetic events. Students will be expected to participate in all relevant activities designed and hosted by the lectures. They will:
    1. Conduct active blogging on-line and hopefully post their contribution on a regular basis. Since students are from diversified backgrounds, they will introduce not just themselves, but also their academic interests on film and culture. They will be guided to present their knowledge on European cinema in a accessible way.
    2. Students will have chances to be familiar with film-related cultural discourse and academic training. Although EUFCS doesn’t require any written exams or quizzes, students will be required to work on a research project (10 page ppt file) on a European director, and compile their notes into a short essay toward the end of the semester.
    3. To better experience the cine-cultural performance, students will be asked to do more fact finding and visual performance related to videomaking. They will make a short video presentation on a European director, and another one on a European city projected on the big screen.
    4. To further promote interaction and vivid discussion among students and with other students, EUFCS will encourage students to visually design their film knowledge with fantastic posters on the city-film or/and the cinematic cities.
    5. EUFCS requires regular class attendance. Students will not be waived from any non-excused absence. Any emergency leading to the absence will have to be posted on the blog.

C. Grading
1.  Academic involvement (blog) 15%
2.  Visual passion (film) 15%
3.  Cinematic dedication (discourse) director dossier 40%
